Safety is Our Priority

Campus Safety serves the campus community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Campus safety and security is a shared responsibility led by the Susquehanna University Campus Safety Office. Our primary mission is to provide services for the university community that meet the highest professional standards, promote a safe and healthy environment for community members and visitors on campus and support our overall academic mission. The office is committed to the principles of honesty, integrity, honor, fairness and respect in our interactions with those we serve.

In Case of Emergencies

Active Shooter

1. Run

  • If possible, run away from the threat.
  • Leave your belongings behind.
  • Call 911 to report the incident.

2. Hide

  • If necessary, hide in an area out of the shooter’s view.
  • Block entry to your hiding place and lock doors.
  • Silence your cell phones and/or pager.

3. Fight

  • Use fighting as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger.
  • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
  • Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter.

When law enforcement arrives:

  • Remain calm and follow instructions.
  • Put down any items in your hands (i.e. bags, jackets).
  • Raise hands and spread fingers.
  • Follow directions from officer(s).

Fire

  • Evacuate the building at the nearest exit immediately.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Close doors while exiting and notify other occupants.
  • Activate nearest fire alarm pull station.
  • Call 911 to report the incident.

Tornado or Severe Weather

  • Immediately seek shelter in the lowest level of this building.
  • Put as many walls between you and the outdoors as possible.
  • If outside, go inside the nearest building to shelter-in-place.

Medical Emergency

  • Call 911 or Campus Safety at 570-372-4444.
  • Provide your name, location, a description of the medical emergency and the number of people injured.
  • Stay on phone until emergency responders arrive.

Suspicious Behavior

  • Call 911 or 570-372-4444 to report incident.
  • Do not physically confront the person exhibiting behavior.
  • Do not let anyone in a locked building or attempt to block a person’s access to an exit.

Public Address / Warning Siren

  • Listen closely to instructions.
  • Follow directions of message.
  • Listen or check text or email for further direction.

Emergency Text or Email

  • Read instructions carefully.
  • Follow directions of message.
  • Wait for further direction.
